7 October 2022
I was pleasantly surprised to find that my local LA Fitness still has not fixed their pool heater, so I was able to swim hard in wonderfully chilled (77/78F) water. I might regret those words as our nighttime temperatures start to head to the low single digits (Celsius), but I'll be happy for now.
I was inspired for today's workout by one I did the evening of October 7th, 2015 at Daly City, California's fantastic Giammona Pool (picture on the right and pool #149 from November 19, 2013). From 2010 through 2017, my work travels took me frequently to the San Francisco area. I would often stay in South San Francisco to have easy access to clients there, as well as in the city and down to Palo Alto. I particularly loved the Giammona pool as it was indoors and almost always empty or largely so during their morning workout hours. I probably came back to this pool more than any other over those seven years.
The only variation I made to this from what I wrote was to do a 400 kick for time (a slow 6:19) instead of the 4 x 75 set. Then, on the second main set, I did each round of broken 200 IM plus 100 easy on 5:00. In terms of my performance:
200 backstrokes: 2:32, 2:29+, 2:29, 2:29, 2:28, 2:26 versus 2015's performance of 2:25, 2:23, 2:23, 2:22, 2:20+
On the broken 200s, I had gone freestyle in 2015, but went IM today and was 2:32, 2:28, 2:22, 2:28, 2:23
So, none of my times were particularly great, but it was a solid workout and a great way to start my Friday.
I also experimented a bit with another attempt at smart goggles, the aptly named Finis Smart Goggles, but I'll save a writeup and review once I've spent more time with them.
Teaser alert / initial impression: a marked improvement over the Form goggles.
