October was all going so swimmingly ...

10 October 2024

After my lazy September, I started October with a renewed training enthusiasm, with an intent to focus my training on the US Masters Swimming Virtual 3,000 yard race. I cranked out an impressive (for me) 24,000 meters of training for the week starting September 30th and kicked off the following week with a solid long course rendition of the Hackett 200 pace set, IM-style. I then had three additional great workouts that week:

  • Wednesday the 9th - 3 x 300 test set, first time ever long course (again at the Olympic pool) going 3:53.2, 3:54.3, 3:54.4. While not stellar compared to my prior SCY and SCM efforts, it was still a good baseline.

  • Thursday the 10th - At the Clissold SCM pool, I did my first 400 IM test set workout since moving to the UK, almost a year ago. I ended up bonking and getting a calf cramp on the straight 400 IM which concludes the set, but that's not uncommon as I come back to this. The 50s (36.2, 38.4, 44.5, 33.3) and 100s (1:29.8, 1:24.9, 1:22.2, 1:19.0) on the set were better than I thought.

  • Friday the 11th - Back on the Olympic Pool, I cranked out a fun (?) distance / IM set attributed by Carson Foster as an old Janet Evans set that was the hardest workout he had ever done:

The furthest thing from my mind was the tiny cut I had incurred when exiting the beautiful Palais des Sports de Puteuax indoor pool on the morning of October 1st.
