Following US Masters Long Course Nationals, I entered a period where swimming is taking a backseat to biking as I prepare for this weekend's Aquathlon in Wasaga Beach (1500 meter lake swim followed by 40KM bike), but even more interestingly, as I get my lower back, ass and legs into the mood for longer bike rides on a Trek Tour of Tuscany that my wife and I will do to celebrate our "Empty Nest" (third and last daughter heads to university this fall). I went a measly ~4,300 meters the week after Nationals and then almost 8,500 total meters last week. I'll probably shoot for around 10K each week until the bike tour, then re-prioritize swimming again starting in October.
While I had a planned bike ride to and from the lake this morning, the dense fog and light rain left me feeling like it would not have been safe to venture out on the roads, so I dropped into LA Fitness for a quick re-run of my 3 x 300 test set. I wasn't quick on my 1,750 yard standard long warmup ...
100s free descend on 1:20 w/snorkel were 1:13, 1:13, 1:11, 1:10+
100s IM kick on back descend on 1:45 were 1:33, 1:32, 1:31, 1:30
50s IM order build on 1:00 were 32, 34, 40, 31+
... I performed better than anticipated on the test set, trying to focus on a smooth stroke, fast turns and more breathing ...
My best performance ever on this was back in December of 2016, when I went 3:08+, 3:09, 3:08+

,,, which puts me about where I was two years ago, but slower than I was last year at the same time.
It felt better than I had expected, though, so I've got that to lean on.
