Chasing Alex Baumann

6 November 2022

OK ... not quite ... but I was certainly inspired by this plaque on the wall behind the start end of the competition pool at the Etobicoke Olympium...

... along with two other plaques highlighting world records set here by the late great Victor Davis and Canadian freestyle stud and former world record holder in the 400 meters freestyle, Peter Szmidt.

I was back to race again in a one-day "Semi-Serious" meet hosted by the great Etobicoke Masters swimming team. As I had chosen to race the 100, 200 and 400 IM along with tossing in the 50 free, I tried to take inspiration from Mr. Baumann. Looking back almost exactly 5 years ago, I had swum a one day meet in September 2017 with these exact events. Here's how 50- and 55-year old Patrick measured up in short course meters:

Event Sep 2017 (Age 50) Nov 2022 (Age 55)

50 free 28.23 27.80

100 IM 1:11.89 1:08.71

200 IM 2:30.61 2:29.93

400 IM 5:20.24 5:11.39

Not a bad start back to the fall-winter-spring season of racing! I'm stoked to see what I can do in 5 months when our Provincial Championships are held at this fantastic fast pool at the end of March 2023. After more training and a full taper, I'm hoping to swim even faster than I did earlier this year.
