There's a classic saying - "To be old and wise, you must first be young and stupid."

I proved with today's "Birthday Bash" workout at the London Aquatics Centre that there's no guarantee that, with age, comes wisdom.

I laid out a 5,800-metre workout which included a fairly faithful rendition of my standard warmup sets followed by two of my favorite test sets:

I've been cranking pretty intensely in my workouts across the whole of March, and with today's workout, my 74KM over the month marks the second highest volume March of my 25-year Masters swimming "career." I really thought that taking a rest day on Sunday would have me feeling chipper enough today ... but, while I absolutely adored the pain and loved the freedom to do this over a little under two hours, my performances were more bashed and crashed than splashed and dashed.

  • On the 300s, after averaging 3:43s the last two outings, I was 3:46.1, 3:49.0, 3:52.1. Ouch.

  • On the Hackett IMs, after a stellar performance at the start of February where I averaged 2:26.0, I was 10 seconds slower per 200.

Cue John Cougar Mellencamp ... but I'm going to sleep with a smile on my face for a new year well-started.
